SERVICE TO OTHERS
Barahona, Dominican Republic
I spent my spring break in 2017 on a "Venture Trip" to the Dominican Republic to work as a volunteer for the Batey Rehab Project. The BRP is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to work with the local community in order to establish a foundation and educational process in order to help break the cycle of poverty and combat sex slavery in the area. They do this by addressing two main obstacles that they identify as "shelter" and "trade".
During my time in Barahona, I helped provide a sustainable, modular home for a mother and 8 children who couldn't have deserved it more. I helped physically build the home from the foundation to the roof with a local crew and my volunteer team. I assisted the organization in noting down the daily process and sketching building and site diagrams. I learned about the local culture and customs through conversation and experience. I made memories that I will never forget. This trip and the BRP have irreversibly altered me for the better. Since then I have kept in contact with the founder of the organization and had the opportunity to stay on as an intern.
I look forward to many more trips and hope to continue to work with them in the future.
